<\/p>\n

There is a definite\u00a0pattern of logical sequence of Kindness in the Youth in my Book\u00a0<\/p>\n

1951\u00a0<\/strong>– Roberta –\u00a0 Act of Kindness by boy in tying her shoelaces \u2013\u00a0<\/p>\n

1986 <\/strong>– Jessica Cave’s B-Day with donations to Cat Scan<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

2021<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Aurora McCaig\u00a0 and Michaela Lynn – Good Deeds Hero Awards –\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The continuation\u00a0of Acts of kindness by the\u00a0youth of the Sault –\u00a0Pretty consistent.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

2: <\/strong>Speaking of the\u00a0flowing out<\/em>\u00a0of kindness.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

I was also thinking\u00a0of HomeComing and the\u00a010 year span of births: 1940 – Ken Danby – Roberta Bondar in 1945 and David Johnston in 1949.\u00a0That was quite an Era for the Sault.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

3: Kindness<\/strong> \u2013 My thoughts on Kindness IS Sault Ste. Marie were verified in 1983<\/strong>– from pages 126 to 130 of my Book – the letter from Pierre Elliott Trudeau \u2013 P.M. states \u201cnone will be more treasured than your warm welcome and kind words\u201d<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 Our Prime Minister at that time recognized that Kindness is a part of us.<\/p>\n

\u00a04:<\/strong> Incivility \u2013 In 2024 while I was writing my Book – 41 years later\u00a0<\/strong>based on what I am observing my thoughts are now changing to concerns that we could be in danger of losing our Kindness. \u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

On pages 152 -153 of my Book our current Prime Minister\u00a0Mark Carney \u00a0<\/strong>recognizes that Kindness is in danger in our Country when he put his name to a letter in the Globe and Mail – which reflects my feelings about the Sault in danger of losing its Kindness as I wrote my Book.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The letter was signed by 50 prominent Canadians including the Current P.M Mark Carney<\/strong><\/p>\n

Hi All:\u00a0 As I sit here my thoughts go to the word “CHOICE”\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

I write that “Kindness Is Sault Ste. Marie” but it is my experience that the\u00a0<\/span>Sault Ste. Marie Way<\/span>\u00a0is to\u00a0<\/span>Choose to be Kind.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

In most of the instances I write about, including in my youth,\u00a0 it was a\u00a0reflexive\u00a0Choice that the people of the Sault made.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

I was reading again a copy of “Our Daily Bread” article from Nov. 2024 by\u00a0Michael E. Wittmer PhD. Professor of Systematic Theology at Grand Rapids Theological Seminary – in which he writes “<\/span>We are who we\u2019ve chosen to become”.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

The people of the Sault have always chosen to be Kind.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

I have been concerned about the lack of civility in our Society for a while.\u00a0I think the Sault \u2013 with its <\/span>Legacy of KINDNESS<\/span> \u2013 can be the example of civility based on our history of KINDNESS.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

I worry\u00a0in today’s wired world that we may lose the Kindness due to today\u2019s current apathy and indifference which is one of the main reasons why I wrote\u00a0the book.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Let’s reinforce who and what we are and keep it strong.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hi All: During a ZOOM Committee Meeting I spoke of my appreciation for the work Alexandra (Alex) Syrette, Communication Manager, Batchewana\u00a0First Nation\u00a0has done and continues\u00a0to do in her role as a contact for the Kindness Week Committee with the Batchewana First Nation. I also spoke of her enthusiasm about Kindness\u00a0Week and that she has agreed\u00a0to join the Committee.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I spoke especially of the writing of Trevor Sayers – a Traditional Knowledge Keeper (pages 201 -202) where he writes about Wiingashk – Sweetgrass – a kindness medicine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I realize I was passionate\u00a0in addressing this as I was, and continue\u00a0to be, very impressed\u00a0with the knowledge he\u00a0is sharing with us and the willingness of the Batchewana\u00a0First Nation to engage\u00a0in Kindness Week.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Anyway, if you have the time, I would recommend that each of us read the whole section (pages 197-202) again to appreciate more fully “The Seven Grandfather Teachings” and about Sweetgrass\u00a0– a\u00a0kindness medicine.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A Kind Person Has Been Called To Be With His Lord\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

FR. Hamish Currie<\/span><\/p>\n

Pastor, Precious Blood Cathedral, Sault Ste. Marie<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Fr. Hamish Currie was born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie, was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Alexander Carter April 25, 1980. Fr. Hamish has served in various parishes throughout the Diocese.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Fr. Hamish Currie who passed away on September 19, 2025, at age 73 was a contributor to this book.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Father Hamish took the time to personally meet with me to discuss KINDNESS and the writing of this book and put his thoughts in writing as a contribution to this book and the Catholic call to Kindness.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

A part of his written thoughts to me are below<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

The Catholic call to KINDNESS is rooted in the Hebrew Scriptures and the New Testament. The Psalmist proclaims, <\/span>\u201cThe Lord is Kind and merciful\u201d<\/span> (Psalm 103). Jesus commands his disciples <\/span>\u201cLove one another, as I have loved you.\u201d(<\/span>Jn 13:34)<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Indeed, throughout the scriptures there are numerous examples of the call to hospitality, care for the unfortunate, concern for the widow and orphan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Catholic theology and practice is founded on the life and death and resurrection of Jesus who is the fullest expression of the KINDNESS of God as expressed in the Scripture.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

The Catholic Catechism describes KINDNESS as one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit and the teaching of the Church through the centuries has affirmed and encouraged that teaching.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Father Hamish, in his contribution to this book,\u00a0 included the written words of Pope Francis (266th pope of the Catholic Church who passed away in 2025) who spoke of KINDNESS often and well. Below is an excerpt from Fratelli Tutti:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Kindness frees us from the cruelty that at times infects human relationships, from the anxiety that prevents us from thinking of others, from the frantic flurry of activity that forgets that others also have a right to be happy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Often nowadays we find neither the time nor the energy to stop and be kind to others, to say \u201cexcuse me,\u201d \u201cpardon me.\u201d \u201cthank you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Yet every now and then, miraculously, a kind person appears and is willing to set everything else aside in order to show interest, to give the gift of a smile, to speak a word of encouragement, to listen amid general indifference.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

If we make a daily effort to do exactly this, we can create a healthy social atmosphere in which misunderstandings can be overcome and conflict forestalled.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Kindness ought to be cultivated; it is no superficial bourgeois virtue. Precisely because it entails esteem and respect for others, once kindness becomes a culture within society it transforms lifestyles, relationships and the ways ideas are discussed and compared.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Kindness facilitates the quest for consensus: it opens new paths where hostility and conflict would burn all bridges (Fratelli Tutti, 222-224).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
